The near-impromptu results of 1960's live LP At The Blackhawk are a triumph of jazz improvisation. As the story goes, Monk had been scheduled to make a sextet album as co-leader with drummer Shelly Manne, but after two days' work, the chemistry wasn't there. The producer added Harold Land and Joe Gordon to the Monk working group for one night at the San Francisco nightclub, and the results were solid, thanks to the unquenchable spirit of Thelonious Monk.
