From the exploded drum and bass of his 1996 full-length debut Feed Me WeirdThings and its follow-up Big Loada, to the jazzy organica of MusicIs Rotted One Note, to the Gamelan-inflected Budakhan Mindphone andthe relatively poppy Go Plastic, Tom Jenkinson, aka Squarepusher, hasconsistently displayed a musical restlessness matched only by a scant handfulof his peers in the world of electronica, particularly Aphex Twin.

And like Aphex Twin, Jenkinson has always been more concerned with how his musicworks in the ear than on the dance floor, a fact made delightfully apparenton his latest double CD release, Do You Know Squarepusher.

Disc one, devoted to new material (with the exception of a totally unnecessarycover of Joy Division's "Love Will Tear Us Apart"), displaysa newfound depth, particularly on the dubby title track and more experimentaloutings like "F-Train" and the majestic "Mutilation Colony."Even the drum & bass epic, "Anstrom-Feck-4" sees him temperingthe zaniness of yore with a focus he simply wouldn't have been capableof a few years ago.

But it's disc two, recorded live in Japan last year, that shows Jenkinsonat his best. While his background as a musician has served as ammunition forsome of his more programming-intensive detractors in the past, it definitelyworks to his advantage in front of an audience. By turns mysterious, brash,and downright noisy, the live disc reveals the real Squarepusher—an electronicdude with the heart and soul of a real rock star.
