Born out of her time on the road, Samara Joy took her touring band into legendary Van Gelder Studios in February of 2024. This record, appropriately entitled Portrait, is a collection of standards (as well as one original) and features her singular voice, alongside arrangements from this tight-knit young group. The recording tells the story of the community she’s created with a new generation of young players and is evocative of the energy of her incredible live show.
Following up on the global success of their album “Let The Bad Times Roll,” legendary So-Cal punk group The Offspring release their 11th album SUPERCHARGED. Produced by Bob Rock, the record continues the band's legacy with some of their best songwriting to date and unmatched musical energy.
Here comes No Obligation, the second full-length release from The Linda Lindas further advances their unironic, joyful, and exciting trajectory of mashing up L.A. punk with alt-rock, garage rock, power pop, new wave, rock en español. No Obligation was written and recorded by the band during spring breaks, winter breaks, and long weekends (Lucia and Eloise are still in high school, Mila just finished middle school, and Bela is patiently waiting for them to get done with it already) and was produced by Carlos de la Garza (Paramore, Best Coast, Bleached). Known for their incredible musicianship and live performances, the band who has shared stages with and opened for Paramore, Japanese Breakfast, Jawbreaker, and Yeah Yeah Yeahs, are about to embark on a massive two-month tour across America with Green Day. Look for headlining shows at small clubs in between-including a sold-out gig at the famously DIY Gilman Street in Berkeley. The new album, No Obligation, is out on October 11. No obligations. No expectations. No limits for The Linda Lindas.

*ON LIMITED HIGHLIGHTER YELLOW VINYL!!! Like the towering mounds of toxic waste from which it gets it's namesake, the music of Oklahoma City noise rock quartet Chat Pile is a suffocating, grotesque embodiment of the existential anguish that has defined the 21st Century. It figures that a band with this abrasive, unrelenting, and outlandish of a sound has stuck as strong of a chord as it has. Dread has replaced the American dream, and Chat Pile's music is a poignant reminder of that shift-a portrait of an American rock band molded by a society defined by it's cold and cruel power systems.Though very much on-brand with Chat Pile's signature flavor of cacophonous, sludgy noise rock, the band's shift to a global thematic focus on Cool World not only compliments the broader experimentations it employs with their songwriting but also how they dissect the album's core theme of violence. Melded into the band's twisted foundational sound are traces of other eclectic genre stylings, with examples of gazy, goth-tinged dirges to abrasive yet anthemic alt/indie-esque hooks and off-kilter metal grooves only scratching the surface of what can be heard in the album's ten tracks. Besides stylistically stretching the boundaries of the Chat Pile sound, Cool World is also the band's first record to have someone else handle mixing duties, with Ben Greenberg (Uniform) capturing and further amplifying the quartet's unmistakably outsider and folk-art edge. While Chat Pile's debut album was plenty disturbing with it's B-movie-inspired interpretation of a "real American horror story", what the band depicts on Cool World is unsettling not just from it's visceral noise rock onslaught, but from depicting how all sorts of atrocities are pretty much standard parts of modern existence. In film terms, think something like a Criterion arthouse film by way of schlocky grindhouse splatterfest: undeniably gratuitous and thrilling in the moment but leaving a looming dread in the back of one's mind for how close the horrors depicted mirror reality.
East My Love, the resplendent, country-tinged 12th album byCurrent Joys, feels familiar. It's meant to: the 12 songs contained within divedeep into the rich folklore of the American West to tell time-worn tales of loveand trauma, heartbreak and spiritual renewal. Cast with a warm glow andfinding Current Joys' Nick Rattigan tapping into some of his lushest, mosthigh-fidelity production to date, it's the kind of album that listeners could seethemselves within, and, hopefully, keep close when they're most in need ofreassurance or escapism. For Rattigan, though, it's all that and more.Rattigan wrote East My Love alone in the woods in Tennessee, withno cell reception and nobody in earshot for miles. Composed three yearsbefore Love + Pop, the experimental pop double record he released in 2023and 2024, the songs on East My Love felt too raw to confront until he felt welland truly out from underneath the cloud that had been cast over him.Rattigan describes the songs as "landmines" that, for years, threatened toupend his carefully balanced mental state. "They were just triggers thatwould put me back in this emotional space, and I think eventually I got to aplace where they were more comforting," he recalls. "That's what I hopepeople find out of the record - a solace from any anxieties or depressions."Along with that comfort comes pain, and an acknowledgementthat any repair requires some level of breakage. Lead single "California Rain"acts like a tableau depicting Rattigan's attempt to escape his demons, it'splacid lyrics a distinct counterpoint to the tidal-wave production: "Isn't it niceto get away?/Clearing my head up, and dull away the pain." It speaks to thealbum's constant coin-toss between peace and chaos: "It's like you're trying tooutrun your demons, but at a certain point, they become your friend, and youhave to walk alongside them," says Rattigan. "I feel like you don't know thatwhen you're suppressing them - when you're hiding them in the rain."At other points, Rattigan is more clear-eyed about the struggle ofmoving forward; opening track "Echoes of the Past," aches with theacknowledgement that inner peace exists on a knife's edge. "The world won'tend in blazing fire and brimstone - it'll end from us not learning from our pastand our mistakes," says Rattigan. There's a purity of catharsis that runs through these songs; writtenwithout pretense, they take base human needs and desires and fit them intoa grander tradition of American songwriting that takes in everything fromWillie Nelson to Bright Eyes. True to that, many of the songs on East My Love, due to their outside-looking-in perspective, play like standards. "Slowly LikeThe Wind," a simple voice-and-guitar ballad, finds Rattigan reassuring hissubject that "slowly like the wind" he'll help push them in the right directionin times of need. On "Lullaby for the Lost," which feels parched butemotionally rich, he urges himself to remember that "we'll get oh so strong"despite the depths of despair he may be feeling in the moment. "I wanted itto be very slow and meditative, with these punctuations of lyrics that I reallywanted to stick out. I felt like it was powerful to accentuate certain points, butalso let the song be a meditative comfort to the listener." That comfort can betraced back to an idea at the core of East My Love that Rattigan describessimply: "Everyone deserves peace of mind."
For the first time in almost a decade, brothers Taylor and GriffinGoldsmith grace the cover of a Dawes record. It's just the two of themthis time, and as such, Oh Brother marks a distinctive new chapter forthe California rock band - one that is both introspective andaccessible, all while maintaining their beloved sense of sincerity.Oh Brother steers Dawes decidedly forward, honoring 15 years ofTaylor and Griffin's musical relationship, as well as the next era of theirband. Each of the nine songs began with just Taylor on guitar andvocals and Griffin on drums. They initially tracked each one livetogether, before adding in additional instrumentation and collaboratingwith touring guitarist Trevor Menear in the studio. Additionally, OhBrother is the first record the brothers have co-produced, workingalongside longtime friend Mike Viola. At this point in the Goldsmith's career, Dawes has cemented itself asone of the most earnest, no-bullshit musical acts out there. They're aband that can move seamlessly between folk rock, piano ballads, andsprawling jams while maintaining both an immediately recognizablesound and a freedom from expectations. Even as the Goldsmithbrothers navigates new chapters in their personal and professionallives, Oh Brother shows how they remain creative, ambitious, andinspired - what it means to be lifers in a band together.

Pianist and composer Aaron Parks returns to Blue Note Records - where he released his influential 2008 album, Invisible Cinema - with Little Big III, the third studio album from his acclaimed band Little Big, featuring guitarist Greg Tuohey, bassist David Ginyard Jr., and drummer Jongkuk Kim. Co-produced by Parks and Don Was, the collective's concise, accessible writing and vibrant, empathetic playing elevate the band's powerfully modern, post-genre concept for improvised music in the 21st century. Throughout, the bandmembers' kinship is palpable. There's a vitality at play on the record that is extraordinary; somehow, it's beautiful and raw in equal measure. "While this record feels the most supple and alive," Parks says, "it also feels like the most focused album Little Big has recorded - the most distilled down to the essence."

Rubblebucket’s new album explores one particular year from the band’s past known as the Year Of The Banana. Frontwoman Kalmia Traver has a personal practice of naming each year since 2011, ie: Year of Brushstrokes (2014), Year Of The Mountain And The Steady Flame (2022), Year Of Stop Crying, Start Flying (2023), etc. However, in 2015 (Year Of The Banana) Kalmia’s romantic relationship with Rubblebucket co-founder Alex Toth fell apart, and that year was spent peeling off psychological layers in search of the sweetness that would allow the friendship, and the band, to continue. “People get obsessed with the albums that were never finished because the band couldn’t stay together,” Kalmia says. “But Year Of The Banana is the album that did get finished.” So Rubblebucket is celebrating 15 years as a band with a record about the year it almost ended.
Kalmia and co-bandleader Alex Toth had formed Rubblebucket four years into their romantic relationship and lasted another six as a couple within the band. In 2015, after ten years together, they were unraveling. “We tried couples therapy,” Kal says. “Even an open relationship.” Alex adds, “I proposed to Kal in the recording studio! She said yes and we broke up a few months later anyway.” The future of the band was uncertain; could Kal and Alex stayfriends and continue to work together post-breakup? Kal says, “It just shows what’s possible if you try every wild therapy imaginable.”
The band brought in mediators, hypnotherapists, psycho-therapists, life coaches, business coaches, recovery groups, guided hallucinogens…Year Of The Banana was birthed from a cornucopia of self-help, spiritual practices, and drugs. In fact, while making the record, Alex and Kalmia kept a list of album ingredients (see list below).
Despite the difficulties these two long-time friends faced in working together, the energy from their fans and joyfully-excellent live touring ensemble inspired them to get back into the studio and writing room for perhaps their deepest and grooviest work yet.
Year Of The Banana opens with an immediate feeling of positivity in the face of melancholy. Kal sings, “When I see the way you’re leaning into living, it makes me want to lean towards living too.” And we’re already dancing. Rubblebucket is still a through-and-through art rock dance band, virtuosic experimental musicians with a pop sensibility along the lines of Talking Heads, Prince, or Kate Bush. But there’s nothing retro about Rubblebucket’s sound; they’re mixing electronics with real instruments, especially horn sections (Alex plays trumpet, Kalmia sax) and they feel at home in the same universe as Caroline Polachek, SZA, or Chappell Roan.
On “Moving Without Touching”, Kal sings high Brian Wilson-esque ooh-oohs while describing disconnection. “I just wanna love you how you want me to, so tell me how you like it…” The lyrics from the album are adapted from a collection of poems Kal wrote in 2015, setting these past feelings to looking-back emotions, sympathy for what their past selves went through, the uncertainty of that year, and gratitude to be able to look back at it safely from the other side.
“The Sorrow That Comes With Loving You” has hints of Motown songwriting but with a tighter more modern dance-beat. “Rattlesnake” is surely the funkiest cut on the record, though it opens with the neurotic “I don’t want to analyze you but…” And it unveils itself as one character pushing another to self-examine; for Rubblebucket, therapy takes the form of a dance party. “Go All The Way With Me” feels like Billy Joel’s “We Didn’t Start The Fire” through a Charli XCX filter while simultaneously being more fun than either of those things. “Swimming In The Light” is a late-album highlight, an extremely groovy list of fantasies that the narrator recognizes as fantasies. “We’re hanging upside down and you pass me a maraschino cherry with your mouth in my imagination… I’ve got your picture but I wanna get to know you for real.”
Listening to Year Of The Banana, it’s impossible to overlook how joyful it is, how full of hope. The album speaks to the power of transforming and adapting relationships in a time when the world needs it most. It speaks of yearning & striving for familiar intimacy that has been stripped away from much of our society by the extractive powers of capitalism. It speaks of creative ways of finding togetherness in a time when humans are the most divided from each other and from the myriad life forms of nature. The album has a transforming effect, inspiring us to face ourselves and radically keep loving each other, assuring us that the unpredictable process has potential to feel as free and sweet as peeling a banana on the dance floor.

The latest album from BONZIE, When I Found The Trap Door affirms her as the rare pop visionary with the power to transform our perception of the world. Since releasing her debut project at age 15, the Chicago-bred singer/songwriter/producer/multi-instrumentalist has reached an extraordinary level of success for an independent musician, including earning abundant critical acclaim from the likes of The New York Times and NPR. Fully produced by BONZIE—who also served as the sole writer on every song and played a variety of instruments throughout the album—When I Found The Trap Door further expands her singular artistry and mines inspiration from such eclectic sources as the psychedelic sci-fi of Satoshi Kon’s Paprika and the elemental folk/blues of guitarist Elizabeth Cotten. In creating her fourth full-length, BONZIE dreamed up each decidedly minimalist yet exquisitely detailed track at famed facilities like Hollywood’s EastWest Studios (where she recorded a full orchestra led by conductor Anthony Parnther, who’s contributed to the scores to such films as Oppenheimer), then joined forces with legendary mixing engineer Michael Brauer (the multi-Grammy-winner known for his work with Bob Dylan, The Rolling Stones, Coldplay, and more). With its intimate exploration of the often-slippery line between truth and illusion, When I Found The Trap Door ultimately provides a welcome rupture from the confines of reality, inviting both illuminating contemplation and absolute surrender.

The Oak Ridge Boys were asking each other, “Who is the person that first taught us about love, living, friends, God, and the other important things in our lives?” We agreed that would be our mothers. Down deep in our hearts, we all felt we were “mama’s boys. In this album, there are heartfelt songs, spiritual songs, memories of growing up, songs about being taught life’s lessons, and fun songs about eating way too much of mama’s home cookin’. We all had a great time singing about the things that mama taught us.

“Christmas is constant,” says Ben Folds. “Allowing you to take stock of what’s different, to understand who you are and all the ways you’ve grown and changed.” That notion lies at the heart of Folds’ brilliantly titled new holiday collection, Sleigher. Built on an eclectic mix of originals and reimagined classics, the album examines thepassage of time through the lens of Christmas, reflecting on memory, loss, and longing as it explores the variety of ways the yuletide season marks the chapters of our lives. The songs are playful here, full of humor and cheer, but they’re also laced with an inescapable sense of melancholy, a looming darkness that always seems to hover around the periphery of those late December nights. Folds’ performances, meanwhile, flirt with the standards while stretching the boundaries of tradition, at times offering up flashes of Vince Guaraldi and Burt Bacharach while still remaining true to Folds’ singularly virtuosic brand of off-kilter indie pop. The result is not so much a Ben Folds Christmas record as it is a Ben Folds record set at Christmas, a meditation on the inexorable turning of the calendar and our ever changing selves as observed at the most wonderful—and challenging—time of the year.
“As always in my songs, the themes are all there— transcendence, positivity and global unity through music,” says Jesse Malin. “This is what I love to do, and I’m going to do everything I can to keep doing it.” Silver Patron Saints: The Songs of Jesse Malin is a tribute and benefit album, with all proceeds to Jesse Malin’s Sweet Relief artist fund.
“This record is a dynamite and long-overdue awareness project, non-stop star time in vigorously personal twists on behalf of a great rock & roll songbook,” writes longtime supporter, David Fricke.
In May 2023, Jesse Malin suffered a rare spinal stroke that left him paralyzed from the waist down. Last December, Malin told Rolling Stone, “I have a lot of anxiety and insomnia. Your mind goes into some dark places. But I just have to keep a positive outlook and believe.” He is now undergoing a strict daily regimen with physical therapy and stem-cell treatments.
"I am getting some strength back in my legs, but it moves a lot slower than I would like. I don’t want to portray it like I'm ready to do the James Brown splits onstage. I definitely have a long way to go, but I'm blessed and so grateful for the amazing fans and friends that I have.”
Fricke adds, “Jesse Malin knows about scars – from his youth, observation and more. They all carry tales, and he's not done telling them. Silver Patron Saints is the gang back at the bar, coming to the stage to toast the composer and his story so far.”
Long a contributor to other people’s causes, Malin is grateful to all the musicians who have rallied around him.
Housed in a 3-page book gatefold jacket, the triple-vinyl set designed by Sam Harris features photos by Vivian Wang and liner notes by David Fricke. The set is available on translucent red/yellow/green vinyl and black vinyl via Glassnote Records.

On Evergreen Allison is again writing about her life, but life’s different these days: Since 2022's Sometimes, Forever Allison experienced a profound & personal loss. New songs emerged, unflinching reflections on what she was feeling. She wanted them to sound that way too, as true to the demos as possible. Nothing overindulgent, everything real
Longing. Heartbreak. Levity. Joy. Being filled with love for all things. All of these sensations flow at once through Canadian singer-songwriter Tess Parks’ new album, Pomegranate. Re-establishing Parks as the consummate artist-observer against a swirling nouveau-delic backdrop, her third solo album arrives on October 25th 2024 (Fuzz Club / Hand Drawn Dracula) and was produced by multi-instrumentalist and close collaborator Ruari Meehan, who shared mixing duties with Grammy-nominated engineer Mikko Gordon (The Smile, Gaz Coombes, Arcade Fire).
Though Tess Parks first became widely known for her string of collaborations with Brian Jonestown Massacre mastermind Anton Newcombe, her 2022 solo offering And Those Who Were Seen Dancing left an unforgettable impression with its signature blend of weight, whimsy, and open-heartedness. The New York Times would praise its “confident, enchanting presence”, whilst Exclaim! proclaimed it as a record that “demands to be heard and felt”. Where Dancing retained a fair measure of bedroom-demo charm, this time the canvas is bigger, with Meehan’s arrangements stretching all the way to the horizon. This is the most ambitious and cinematic Parks’ music has ever sounded. Drawing on psychedelic elements in a way that sounds decidedly fresh, the dreamlike atmospheres feel oddly nostalgic and modern at the same time.
The pair are backed on most tracks by band members Francesco ‘Pearz’ Perini – whose piano and organs shine through gloriously on ‘Koalas’ and ‘California’s Dreaming’ respectively – and Marco Ninni, who provides the solid backbone throughout on drums. From a vocal perspective, it feels like Parks pushes her voice to new heights on this album too. Her lyrics are sharp, ever-present, and imbued with strength, depth, and poetic purpose, which shine particularly bright on tracks like ‘Koalas’ and ‘Charlie Potato’. They weave through her flurries of beautiful melodic hooks, featuring sublime choruses and complex, multi-layered harmonic structures, as showcased on ‘Crown Shy’ and ‘Bagpipe Blues’ especially.
On Pomegranate there are also plenty of new experiments and guests introduced. ‘Koalas’, for example, features the spellbinding whistling of Molly Lewis, lending a bittersweet Morricone-esque charm. ‘Crown Shy’ features soaring strings (arranged by Ninni and played by Joe Butler), and ‘Bagpipe Blues’ and ‘Charlie Potato’ are elevated by Kira Krempova’s ethereal flute playing – the latter also accompanied with Wurlitzer piano played by Oscar ‘SHOLTO’ Robertson. The euphoric ‘Running Home To Sing’ and album-closer ‘Surround’ centre the synthesiser for the first time, whilst the piano features more prominently across many of the tracks.
Listening to Fashion Club's self-produced second album ALove You Cannot Shake feels like being caught in the crossfireof a profound beam of light. You can't help but feel bothenlivened and exposed as it's aberrant synth lines, artful stringsand disfigured guitars swell into larger-than-life crescendos, which evoke a divine yet probing spotlight.Pascal Stevenson, the Los Angeles-based musician behindFashion Club, likens the experience of hearing A Love YouCannot Shake to staring into the sun, and though the recordwasn't written with religion in mind, it's heavenly sonics andemotional sagacity also make it feel like a prophetic encounter. The album was shaped by Stevenson's gender transition andsobriety journey and parses her fluid emotions surroundingthese events and other personal trials and tribulations. But asmuch as it's a dialogue between Stevenson's current andformer selves, it's also an invitation for listeners to join her inthe work of discarding bitterness and re-centering hope, especially when such efforts feel futile. Musically, A Love YouCannot Shake is an unshackling of expectations, asStevenson's previous stint as bassist in the L.A. post-punkoutfit Moaning and her first record as Fashion Club, 2022'sScrutiny, didn't necessarily reflect the full range of her taste, which includes ambient, pop, classical and dance music, orembody her sensitive tenderness and femininity.A Love You Cannot Shake also thrives on a fluid sonic palette. The album's magnetic immersiveness hinges on it's strangedynamic shifts, jagged production and ambitious songstructures with parts that don't repeat-choices influenced byher love of left-field electro-pop and her classical musicbackground. While Stevenson handled most of theinstrumentals on Scrutiny, this LP is much more collaborative, featuring an array of contributors who lent strings, piano, pedalsteel and more. Plus, this album boasts country harmoniesfrom Perfume Genius ("Forget"), high-pitched coos from JaySom ("Ghost") and gauzy whispers from Julie Byrne ("RottenMind"). Stevenson's vocal evolution is also on display with thisrecord, embracing a softer delivery that's more reflective of herpersonality and identity

LIVING GATE unleash their debut full length, Suffer as One! The band, featuring Aaron Rieseberg (YOB,) Lennart Bossu (Oathbreaker, Amenra,) Wim Coppers (Oathbreaker, Wiegedood,) and Levy Seynaeve (Wiegedood,) surfaces from the underground to release one of 2024's most unrelenting, Old School Death Metal records.
A follow up to the Deathlust EP and the Internal Decomposition single, LIVING GATE's thesis statement is now bold and clear: old school, heavier-than-anything-ever Death Metal is here to stay. Suffer as One exemplifies all of the strengths of the genre through its sheer ferocity. Off rip, the riffs on "To Cut the Head Off a Snake" are equal parts muscular and angular. The blast beats and double-bass stomps suffocate the listener with low end - vocals are utterly guttural and pierce from within. Every moment on Suffer as One feels crucial; riffs, melodies, even vocal phrasings turn on their heads at the drop of a dime, giving way to hellish solos set against technical-meets-bombastic rhythm sections.
With an eye to the future, LIVING GATE seek to solidify their own take on the genre with tracks like "Destroy and Consume", which leans on a borderline hardcore swagger, crashing it head on with leads and riffs that chug and swirl around into spheres of madness. Elsewhere, Rieseberg carries the torch for the band in "Massive Depletion In Eb Minor", a bass interlude that makes way for the band's massive title track.
Charlie Parker - "Bird In Kansas City" / This new set of rare Charlie Parker recordings dating from between 1941-1951, most of them never having been heard before and some never even having been known to exist, chronicle Bird's evolution from a blossoming soloist with the Jay McShann Band into a brilliant improviser who dominated the jazz landscape for decades to come. In addition to two unreleased 78s with the McShann band, this set offers two sets of private recordings made with local musicians and a very relaxed-sounding Parker. Verve Label Group; Verve; Jazz
Bastille - "&" / Bastille's fifth studio album '&' is a collection of story songs, including "Intros & Narrators," and "Blue Sky & The Painter." Dan Smith says of the release, "I've always loved writing story songs and using tales of other people as a way into making music and talking about my experiences in life. Over the last few years, I've been working on a whole load of songs about people who I think are fascinating and whose lives really spoke to me." 2 LP set on recycled black vinyl in gatefold jacket with artwork created by Theo Hersey and Dan Smith
Merci is a deeply personal expression of gratitude, a celebration of the powerful relationships that keep music alive. This effervescent recording is rooted in the compositions of Gabriel Fauré, whom Kathryn Stott calls her “musical soulmate,” and follows the arcs of his inspiration and influence, from the creations of his teacher Camille Saint-Saëns and his friend and supporter Pauline Viardot to works by his student Nadia Boulanger and her sister, Lili. Merci is testament to the gift of friendship, to the connections among performers, between students and teachers, and across generations that make music magic.

Willie Nelson is now in his 7th decade as a songwriter, performer and recording artist, but one of his most underrated talents is song interpretation. Over his career he has tackled songs from across the world of music, making each his own. Now for his 76th studio album and 153rd album overall as he celebrates his 91st year, Willie turns his gaze to a collection of songs by rock legends, idiosyncratic singer songwriters, alt-rock heroes, and indie folk artists. The result is a gorgeously cohesive rumination on loss, love, and world-weary hope, perfectly complemented by spare and spooky musical production. Lovingly curated and produced by his son Micah Nelson, Last Leaf On The Tree finds Willie covering songs from moody indie rock (Beck), psych alt-pop (The Flaming Lips) and punk-informed folk (Sunny War, Micah’s Particle Kid) to thought-provoking soul jazz (Nina Simone) and lesser-known gems from legends like Tom Waits, Neil Young, Keith Richards, and Warren Zevon. In addition, the album features new takes on one of Willie’s oldest songs (“The Ghost” from 1962) plus a new one penned with Micah (“The Color Of Sound”) that joins Willie’s collection of Zen-soaked classics. In addition to producing, Micah Nelson plays many of the instruments and even designed the album cover. He is joined by a host of celebrated musicians plus guest spots from legendary producer and musician Daniel Lanois, John Densmore of The Doors and harmonica master Mickey Raphael, who has played alongside Willie for over 50 years.
It’s dangerous to put Illiterate Light in a box, especially with the release of their new album, Arches. Are they a guitar-driven indie rock duo? Kaleidoscopic neo-psychedelia? Synth-kissed, harmony-laden folk? What does one do with an album beginning with “fake tits and diet coke,” then pivoting to train derailments in rural Ohio and never-ending black holes? These prolific farmers-turned-rockers have captured the energy of their live shows—fans crowd-surfing, moshing, crying, and crooning—and infused it into their latest release.
“We’ve always been shape shifters, moving between heavy, dark distortion and gentle sweet fingerpicking, writing aggressive songs, introspective songs, and love songs, exploding and embracing,” reflects singer-guitarist Jeff Gorman. “Smashing it all together used to feel strange, but now there's a glue between everything we do. Our fans get it. They care less about genre. All they care about is feeling. And that’s all we care about. Are you alive or not?” Illiterate Light’s third album, Arches, is not a passageway but an arrival. “We’re no longer striving to define a sound,” said drummer Jake Cochran. “We’re leaning into sides of ourselves that have felt off-limits, sticking to what feels right rather than concerning ourselves with comparison.” Out November 1 via Thirty Tigers, the record is bursting with thunderous anthems, biting lyrics, and lush harmonies.
The band originated in the Shenandoah Valley in 2015 when multi-instrumentalists Gorman and Cochran began playing music together while working on an organic farm. Eventually, they left the farm to focus on music, adopting the moniker Illiterate Light from a Wilco lyric. After several years of non-stop touring, they signed with Atlantic Records and released their eponymous full-length debut in late 2019. Two years later, they signed with Thirty Tigers and, in 2023, issued their critically acclaimed LP, Sunburned. Shortly after, they released two additional EPs, making Arches their fourth release in two years. Arches was recorded in two very different locations: small-town Appalachia at Gorman’s home studio and Hollywood, CA at Sunset Sound with producer Joe Chiccarelli (The Strokes, Beck, The Killers). “We wanted the best of both worlds,” says Gorman. “We spent several days with Joe at Sunset. To record vocals in the same live room as so many of my heroes—Neil Young, Paul McCartney, Dylan—was unreal. I knew I was in a holy place.” The LA session was paired with sessions in Virginia, where Gorman and Cochran co-produced the bulk of the record with longtime collaborator Danny Gibney. In their hometown, they experimented with soaring instrumental journeys and had friends sit in on the sessions to keep things lively.
“Having our community stop by the sessions kept us on our toes—we haven’t been able to do that in the past. It helped connect us to the feeling of our live show,” recalls Cochran. Illiterate Light’s live performances, described by the Washington Post as “massive,” feature Gorman on one foot, hammering bass on a foot-pedal synth, shredding big guitar riffs, and spitting out song after song while Cochran matches Gorman harmony for harmony, dancing with his standing drum kit, teetering on the edge of the stage only to dive head first into his next solo.
Arches is the closest you can get to their live show, with heavier songs like “I Ride Alone” and “Bloodlines” encapsulating the best of the writhing, uninhibited front-row experience. The keystone of the album, “Norfolk Southern,” crashes in with Gorman belting, “Here comes the Norfolk Southern / It's off the tracks / and heading for you,” with Cochran chanting, “break, break, break, break” to the ghost of the train that derailed in 2023 in East Palestine, Ohio, releasing 10,000 gallons of hazardous materials into the atmosphere. The song also serves as a metaphor for Gorman’s own turbulent feelings. “I certainly wanted to shine a light on the environmental catastrophe. But strangely, some days I feel just like that Norfolk Southern, barreling out of control at warp speed.” Gorman lets the lyrics take control. Showing up relentlessly, day after day, to his home studio dubbed “The Bookhouse” (a tribute to David Lynch's Twin Peaks), he can’t predict what will arise. For the album's first track, “Payphone,” the opening lyrics were a surprise to Gorman: “Fake tits and diet coke / Full of undefeated hope / You are the only one I trust.” The jangly and groovy album opener is a pep talk between a woman named Big Red and her man as he faces crippling self-doubt and is self-medicating. She comforts him during a time of despair on a phone call that continues to drop.
Another relationship study, “Montauk,” is a cold beachside dance under the full moon inspired by the central question in Gorman’s favorite movie, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. “Do we go for it again—even though we're destined to fail?” he asks. “For me, the answer is a resounding yes.” “All the Stars Are Burning Out” continues in that reflective vein. “It’s a throwback song, about getting high, going for a drive, dreaming up your future. You’re looking at that wide open black sky of bright stars, and they’re so beautiful and inspiring, and they make you want to follow your dreams. And yet all those stars eventually burn out. It’s a song about going for it even though life is impermanent and full of change,” Gorman said.
The saying goes, “arches never sleep.” Designed to distribute weight evenly, arches naturally rebalance as the structure around them shifts over time. Illiterate Light’s Arches exists within this metaphor in many ways. The album marks a period of artistic strength, a balancing act of identity and possibility. To listen to Arches is to plant yourself within the arch, to stand in the threshold between two worlds and gaze into Gorman and Cochran’s constant motion forward.
Raised in Long Beach, Lil Peep (born Gustav Ĺhr) launched his career through the self-release of his music online as a teenager. He garnered attention in 2015 following the success of a slew of singles and his first solo mixtapes, "Lil Peep; Part One" and "Live Forever". Over the course of two years, Peep amassed millions of fans, who connected with him through his gritty lyrics that explored themes of love, loss and loneliness. Branded "the future of emo" by Pitchfork in January 2017, Peep's genre-bending style contributed to his reputation as a pioneer of the late 2010s post-emo revival, dishing out a handful of full-lengths and several extended-plays all before the release of his debut album "Come Over When You're Sober, Pt. 1" in 2017. After his breakthrough 2016 mixtapes "Crybaby" and "Hellboy" made waves in underground circles, Peep toured the United States and Europe, walked the runways at Fashion Week and began collaborating with increasingly prominent artists between New York, Los Angeles and London throughout 2017. At the time of his death just two weeks after his 21st birthday, Peep had achieved status as one of the scene's most promising rising stars. Since his emergence in 2015, he has racked up 5 billion views on YouTube and over 20 billion streams across all platforms.
The secret has been out for a while now. After nearly nine years apart, Swedish prog rock legends Beardfish are back. Songs For Beating Hearts is the first new music from Beardfish in nine years, but as its many magical moments unfold, it really is as if the band had never been away.
With strong echoes of past glories but a whole new vibe of wistful wonderment, Songs For Beating Hearts is a glowing testament to the magic that happens when these four musicians join forces. From the dreamy melancholy of the opening Ecotone and the intricate opulence of five-part sprawl Out In The Open, to the prog-friendly pastoralism of bittersweet 11-minute epic Beating Hearts, and the sobering prog-noir of the closing Torrential Downpour, Beardfish have not just made their strongest work to date, but also their most emotionally resonant. Loosely held together by thoughts of love, loss, friendship and finality, Songs For Beating Hearts is the sound of four kindred spirits laying their hearts bare.
A triumphant comeback that nobody saw coming, Songs For Beating Hearts will be available as a Limited CD Digipak (incl. bonus track), Gatefold 140g LP & as Digital Album.
Confessions20thAnniversary Edition contains alternative album artwork and orchestral versions of “Burn” and “Superstar” as bonus tracks on a 2-LP black vinyl.

Description Canadian artist Jonny Tobin’s new modern funk album “Steppin’ Out” on Austin Boogie Crew Records shines with its catchy songwriting, stellar production and synth wizardry. It kicks off with a banger of a title track featuring Daniel David of renowned group The Pendletons. This bouncy jam captures the elation of reemerging into the world after the 2020 lockdown to reconnect and dance with our loved ones.
California underground legend XL Middleton jumps on “Change It Up” to drop slick raps over a shimmering Tobin beat. XL expresses how ‘the funk gave me somethin’ to believe in’ as a sensitive soul growing up in hectic L.A. The lush bridge, virtuosic solo and epic breakdown make this tune extra fresh. Tobin links with Austin, TX group The Vapor Caves on the uptempo yet sultry “Give And Take.” Sweet vocals, rich harmonies and talkbox adlibs buoyantly float over the track’s verses until the energy swells for a jubilant chorus. On “Rock Me,” one of two instrumentals on the LP, Tobin’s grandiose chords and guest Marlon Petronio’s guitar solo make this number apt for an 80’s action film soundtrack.
The record’s second half kicks off with the addictive “Never Too Late” featuring fellow Canadian and vocal powerhouse Maya Killtron. The beautiful strings, transcendent bridge and twinkly keys lend disco-roller-rink vibes to this winner cut. Bay area crooner Rojai pines for a lover on the bumpin’ cruiser “Drive Me Wild,” bolstered by a soaring 90’s R&B influenced bridge. Tobin dips into his video game bag and belts out some amazing synth solos on instrumental head-nodder “Boombox.” Soulful dancer “Time Flies” with Mexico City duo Shiro Schwarz brings the album to its conclusion. Written with a grounded post-pandemic perspective, the sweet lyrics highlight the importance of appreciating ourselves and our loved ones as the precious years go by.
The original version of “Serious” was included on Kazzey's 2022 album Voyage. The collaboration between him & LA modern funk mainstay XL Middleton became a favorite in the street dance scene, soon becoming used in innumerable videos & dance battles internationally. It also found its way into heavy club rotation thanks to forward-thinking DJs who include the modern funk sound in their sets, from the West Coast of the US to Japan, and back to Kazzey's native France. Now, the track is finally being pressed on vinyl, and included on the b-side is a bonus remix (the “Midnight Drift Remix”) bringing a silkier, late-night edge to this certifiable dance floor filler.
To round out the year, Los Angeles' own Night Owls are hitting the decks once again with their next re-imagined soul classic, this time digging deep in the crates and taking on Lee Moses’ 1970s Maple Records version of the Herman Hitson classic "Got That Will." Flipping this rare soul cut into an early Dancehall-inspired banger, producer & guitarist Dan Ubick brought in powerhouse singer Gina Murrell (Wailing Souls, U-Roy, The Ethiopians, Orgone) to match the new energy and direction brought by Night Owls' rhythm section of Ubick, Wilder, Colie, and Rivas. But like the old Ginsu knife adverts...that’s not all - this go ‘round Ubick also enlisted Kingston's own legendary deejay Ranking Joe (Greensleeves, Trojan, Joe Gibbs, etc.) to bless the track with his signature rhythmic, ad-lib stylings, giving this rendition an even sharper edge.
The flip side features a proper Version in “Got that Dub" mixed by Night Owls keyboard maestro and engineer Roger Rivas complete with dubbed-out Space Echoes, verb splashes, SynDrum hits and drum 'n' bass sections and a completely different vocal take from Ranking Joe showcasing even more of his signature, razor-sharp wordplay. “Got that Dub" gives this Night Owls re-imagined deep soul classic extended life and is primed for a late 70’s/early 80’s sound system set, blasting loud and turned to eleven so all you deejays and selectors make sure to grab doubles before they are gone!
The best-selling book, Jesus Calling, celebrates it's 20th anniversary in 2024 and Capitol Records Nashville has partnered with them to release a companion compilation that includes inspirational and uplifting songs of faith, family and love from some of the biggest country music stars.
Nothing You Don’t Know is a new project by producer E. Dan, working as ID Labs, integral in building the foundation of Mac Miller’s sound, released via Warner Records and ReMember (Mac’s own label imprint). The album started as an exploration of the types of soundscapes that E would have liked to explore with Mac and served to fill a creative void that opened after Mac's passing. Fittingly, ID Labs enlisted Mac’s brother and longtime visual collaborator, Miller McCormick, to create the artwork and visualizers for the project.
It's the second instrumental album ID Labs has made. "Nothing You Don’t Know" is a line from an Amira Baraka poem featured in the Roots song ‘Something In The Way Of Things (In Town)’. The full line is ‘I know things you know and nothing you don't know’ and is a beautiful way to express that you have something to say that the listener may be familiar with but containing a perspective they may not have encountered.
NASHVILLE, TENNESSEE is the sophomore album from Big Loud's esteemed visionary and Nashville's most unpredictable hitmaker Ernest. 2024 release. The Bellamy Brothers are very excited to bring you 'Double Dog Dare' an album of great new songs and some classic duets. "When you've released over fifty albums, it's always a question of is this a new sound or the same classic sound... well, we'd have to say a little of both, ranging from classic country, rockabilly, a little gospel and yes there are two dog songs, hence the name 'Double Dog Dare'. The duets on the album are some of the favorites we've ever done starting with "Forever Ain't Long Enough" with Gene Watson, a classic country song and video that already has over a million views on YouTube. "Normal Ain't Coming Back" is a duet with the Dove Award winners and Grammy nominated family group 'The Isaacs'. And of course, the duet of one of our classic hits "Lie To You For Your Love" with one of our all time favorites, K.T. Oslin, recorded just a couple of years before her untimely passing. Even though there are three collaborations, this album is not a duets album. There are 9 more brand new tracks besides the songs with our incredible guests!
Camelot, Jennifer Castle's extraordinary, moving chronicle of the artist in early middle age, charts a realer place than the legendary Camelot of the British Early Middle Ages, but it too is a space more psychic than physical. In Castle's Camelot, the fantastic interpenetrates the mundane, and the Grail, if there is one, distills everyday experience into art and art into faith, subliming terrestrial concerns into sublime celestial prayers to Mother Nature, and to the unfolding process of perfecting imperfection in one's own nature: "Back in Camelot / I really learned a lot / circles in the crops and / sky-high geometry..." "Castle's songs are vibrant and bountiful landscapes, and even in their quietest, darkest moments, they thrum and glow. [She] has a stunning capacity for crafting lines rich with nuance, humor and devastating beauty." - CBC
In a world where there are no more heroes, The Fleshtones walk the earth like Roman gods. Since their inception in 1976 in Queens, New York, and their sweaty, boozy gestation at legendary venues such as CBGB, Max's Kansas City, and the storied Club 57- recently feted at the Museum of Modern Art, where their proto-video underground film "Soul City" was unspooled for art stars, glitterati, and a raft of punk rockers who managed to get past the front gate - they have perpetrated their proprietary brand of SUPER ROCK, a frenetic amalgam of garage punk and soul, punctuated by the big beat and unleashed with the spectacular show business majesty which has kept them on the road for over forty years, adored by audiences whose love for them borders on religious fervor. It's Getting Late (... and More Songs About Werewolves) is a smash that could have dropped at any point in their epic career - it is an outburst, and a celebration of the SUPER ROCK sound. Unlike their contemporaries, they have not dialed down the tempos to compensate for osteoporosis, they have not lost anything on their fastball, and continue to throw it for strikes. The hardest working band in garage rock has never sounded better, and now you see why they've been your favorite band's favorite band for decades. The first pressing on It's Getting Late (... and More Songs About Werewolves) is pressed on Pink Acid Wash vinyl!
Million Voices Whisper is the third Fantasy solo album (Man in Motion and Ashes & Dust) by the remarkable musician/songwriter Warren Haynes. Enlisting an All-Star core of support, New Orleans native Terence Higgins on drums, organist and keyboard wiz John Medeski, Mule bassist Kevin Scott, and genius guitarist Derek Trucks, Haynes has been inspired to craft his best work, eleven original songs that establish a high bar in a genre that could easily be termed Modern Classic Rock.
For his latest album 'Fever Longing Still' which was recorded at Neil Finn’s studio Roundhead in New Zealand, he’s focused on the topic of Love. The fire of love. The pain of love. Love of family. Love entwined in memory and place. Love has always been at the heart of many of Paul Kelly’s greatest songs. To Her Door, How to Make Gravy, Careless, If I Could Start Today Again, Deeper Water, When I First Met Your Ma, Sweet Guy, Dumb Things, Firewood and Candles, The Oldest Story in the Book.
Taken from a line in Sonnet 147 by Shakespeare, whose writing has thrilled and inspired Kelly ever since schooldays, Fever Longing Still is his first set of new original material since 2018’s Nature, and it delivers 12 additions to that superb catalog of love songs spanning more than 40 years. “Hello Melancholy, Hello Joy,” as one of the new songs says. Recorded at Roundhead, Neil Finn’s studio in New Zealand.
As any of the best-loved songs from Kelly’s pen, “All Those Smiling Faces” is an emotional and vivid exploration of recollection, like peering inside the memories in a photo album. “Down the years the family face / Keeps jumping around from place to place / A look, a shape, a nose, an eye / That everlasting thing that’s never gonna die.” Taking inspiration from three of Kelly’s favorite poets, Dana Gioia in Finding a Box of Family Letters, Wislawa Szymborska’s Letters of the Dead and Thomas Hardy’s Heredity.
First appearing as a banjo-led version on 1992’s bluegrass album Smoke, “Taught By Experts” also surfaced as an acoustic guitar song on the Live, May 1992 album and took on yet another form on the soundtrack to the TV series Fireflies. “I have been circling that song for years,” Kelly says. “We thought we should try it with a chiming electric guitar part, and when we did that, we knew that was it.” That guitar part nods back to “Leaps and Bounds,” a love song to Melbourne, from the classic 1986 album Gossip.
Among the newly-penned tracks, “Harpoon to the Heart,” is the kind of song which might have been written any time in the past 100 years. “Dan had an idea for a guitar part where he played his line then put a harmony line on top of it the way Chet Atkins or Les Paul and Mary Ford would have done,” Kelly says. “It has a quirky, playful spirit to it, which earned its place on the record. That one was written quickly and ‘Houndstooth Dress’ came out in one go. For others we went right around the block,” Kelly says.
“There has been a long gap since the last album of new songs,” Kelly says, “and I realize now that this record is a bit like Gossip, an album with a long gestation where the songs are all quite different to each other in style.” Like Gossip, Fever Longing Still is an album driven by a band in peak form.
“Looking back on what we’ve done with these songs, it’s really a band record,” Kelly says. “That made me reflect on the longevity of the band, this squad. Peter Luscombe (drums) has been with me for more than 30 years, Bill McDonald (bass) and Dan Kelly (guitar) for 20. Even the newbies Cameron Bruce (keys) and Ash Naylor (guitar) have been with me since 2007. “Our philosophy is eclectic; we want to make each song different from the last. I just love that when I bring a new song to them, it can take on a completely new life.”
You know that time is now when you hear an album as strong as Fever Longing Still.

State Champs surges with the energy of The Finer Things (2013), Around the World and Back (2015), and Living Proof(2018). It expands on the Kings of the New Age (2022) blueprint. That beloved post-pandemic album proved the band will survive. State Champs now sees them thrive.
Songs like “Silver Cloud,” “Clueless,” “Sobering,” “Tight Grip,” “I Still Want To,” and “Golden Years” explode with high-energy, passionate, and smartly constructed precision. While big, bold, and slick, the production nevertheless sounds like a band in a room together or decimating the stage. “We found our way, through the ups and downs within us, personally and as a band, and wanted to express that,” explains frontman Derek DiScanio. “This is the right time to showcase it.” Bassist Ryan Scott Graham agrees. “When we stepped back and looked at the songs, sonically and thematically, it’s a great vision of who we are. Every era of State Champs exists within this record.”

Knocked Loose have announced their hotly anticipated new album, A Different Shade of Blue -- a mammoth of a sophomore release and massive step forward for the band and for hardcore and metal as we know it. Recorded by producer Will Putney, the new LP was approached slower and more methodically. Abandoning the previous 'live in studio' recording approach for something more deliberate, the band cranked out twelve new tracks that deal with all manner of anger, especially loss in lieu of absence. While some musical influences are easily identified - Pantera, Hatebreed, Obituary and more - the band's palette and canvas has expanded by leaps and bounds, incorporating Gothenburg-style death metal (At the Gates, early In Flames), slam metal (Devourment, Dying Fetus), blood-thirsty thrash (Sodom, Kreator), black metal (Craft) and the mind-boggling complexity of latter noisy hardcore like Snapcase and Bloodlet. Clocking in at a lean and mean 37 minutes and featuring guest vocals from Emma Boster of Dying Wish and Keith Buckley of Every Time I Die, A Different Shade of Blue grabs the listener by the throat from the jump and slowly tightening that grip for the duration.

Brainiac is celebrating the 30th anniversary of their debut album, Smack Bunny Baby, by bringing it back to vinyl, complete with bonus track, “Velveteen Freak Scene.” Upon its initial release in 1993, SPIN called the album "a noisy little devil that benefits greatly from a fondness for Moog synth and a good ear for (buried) melody." With its reputation established, the band went on to open for Beck, the Breeders, and The Jesus Lizard. Members of Nine Inch Nails, Death Cab For Cute, Muse, and more have cited Brainiac as an influence.

"Nathaniel Rateliff has written and recorded his first solo record since the explosive debut of his work together with The Night Sweats. And It’s Still Alright is an intensely personal 10-song album of vibrant country-blues, badland ballads, ornate Americana and jazz-inflected R&B. Rateliff’s warm baritone, ranging from gently hushed to a guttural howl, imbues these superbly drawn character studies with raw, naked emotion. And It’s Still Alright was produced by Rateliff, Night Sweats’ drummer Patrick Meese and James Barone of the indie band, Beach House and primarily recorded at National Freedom in Cottage Grove, Oregon, the studio formerly owned by the late Richard Swift (who produced both Night Sweats recordings). While Rateliff, Meese and Barone handled much of the album’s instrumentation, several friends make contributions including Night Sweats’ guitarist Luke Mossman; bassist Elijah Thomson (of the indie band Everest); keyboardist Daniel Creamer (of The Texas Gentlemen); steel guitarist Eric Swanson (touring musician for Israel Nash) and renowned string arranger Tom Hagerman (of the instrumental vocal ensemble DeVotchKa), whose delicate orchestrations beautifully complement the album’s deep emotional terrain.
And It’s Still Alright’s many highlights include album opener “What A Drag,” which sketches a vivid portrait of a disconnected relationship, “Tonight #2,” a haunting, end-of-the-world waltz, “Time Stands,” detailing an epic, desperate struggle for love and the elegiac ""Rush On,"" a heart-breaking requiem for Swift. Unguarded and unflinchingly real, Nathaniel Rateliff’s And It’s Still Alright expands on the sounds and styles he’s used to great affect across both his band and solo careers."
Layla Revisited (Live at LOCKN') captures Tedeschi Trucks Band at their incendiary best, together with Phish’s renowned guitarist/vocalist Trey Anastasio. Recorded August 24, 2019, the performance of the legendary album in its entirety was kept secret until the moment the band took the stage. One listen and it’s clear that their surprise performance that night - which also included close TTB collaborator Doyle Bramhall II on guitar - meant something extra special to the astonished fans who were lucky to experience it. From the fiery guitar interplay between Derek Trucks and Anastasio on Keep on Growing, to Tedeschi's commanding work on Have You Ever Loved a Woman, and Anastasio and Trucks' inspired playing on Hendrix's classic Little Wing and the live set closer Layla, the musicianship is outstanding throughout. No group of musicians could pay homage to the iconic material better than this. With liner notes penned by Trucks himself (who was named after Derek and The Dominoes), and lovely studio duet version of Thorn Tree In The Garden from Trucks and Tedeschi as a closer, this is a live album for any collection.

Critical reaction to Nathaniel Rateliff & Night Sweats’ debut album has been passionate on both sides of the Atlantic. The UK’s Q Magazine 4 Star rave proclaims: “As an album, it’s something of a revelation; the stunning sound of an artist being born again,” while the Village Voice adds, “A new project doesn’t necessarily encourage a full-on reckoning that wreaks havoc on your body and soul, but that’s what Nathaniel Rateliff and The Night Sweats conjure up night-in and night-out,” and Consequence of Sound furthers: “Drums and bass stomp deep and hard right from the first notes…Horns accompany organs that ring out with quintessential Stax vibes, even as some sturdy guitar work links back to Rateliff’s folksier recordings. As is so often the case in a live setting, it’s Rateliff’s own vocals that seal the deal…”
Living in the Material World, George Harrison’s highly praised 2nd solo album of original music following The Beatles’ 1970 dissolution, recently marked its 50th anniversary. With lyrics underscoring his enduring exploration of spiritual themes, the album resonated deeply with audiences. Upon release, Rolling Stone described it as a "pop classic", a work that "stands alone as an article of faith, miraculous in its radiance." Following Wilco’s acclaimed 2023 album Cousin, Wilco revisited unfinished material from these sessions to craft ‘Hot Sun Cool Shroud’. Collaborating again with engineering mixer Tom Schick, the band crafted six tracks that expand on the sound of Cousin. According to Jeff Tweedy, they have “a summertime-after-dark kind of feeling. It starts off pretty hot, like heat during the day, has some instrumentals on it that are a little agitated and uncomfortable, and ends with a cooling breeze.”
Out of print on vinyl since the '70s, this prime slab of '65 Buck is Buck at his best. Topping the country charts and being named the Billboard Country Album Of The Year, the interest in this album never waned. This is THE Buck Owens album to own, as it is the apex of his career with the Buckaroos. Don Rich never sounded tighter (and even throws a guest vocal with "Wham Bam"). There has never been a more distinctive nor instantly recognizable sound in country music than Buck Owens, and this album is reflective of that. There are a handful of hits on this one, including the title track, "Cryin' Time," and "Memphis." If you only have room for one Buck Owens album, well, this is it! Cut all analog and pressed on orange vinyl for RSD Black Friday 2024.

“Mata leao” means “lion killer” in Portuguese, an appropriate title for this beast of an album, Biohazard’s first as a trio. In this case less is more; with a sound blending so many ingredients (hardcore, rap, metal), the increased focus brought on by the streamlined line-up just hardens the tip of the jackhammer. This RSD Black Friday 10” release on Purple Nebula Vinyl celebrates the anniversary of this EP, capturing the band at a time when they were catapulting toward the first major peak of their career. For more than five decades Carlos Santana has been the visionary force behind artistry that transcends musical genres and generational, cultural, and geographical boundaries. To date, Santana has won ten GRAMMY Awards and three Latin GRAMMY Awards, received the Billboard Century Award, is a member of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, received the Billboard Latin Music Awards’ Lifetime Achievement honor, is the recipient of the Kennedy Center Honors Award, and has been cited by Rolling Stone as #11 on their list of the “100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time.” For RSD Black Friday 2024, Santana teams up with producers Lino Nicolosi, Nicolosi Team, and Narada Michael Walden (Whitney Houston, Mariah Carey), to present three distinct versions of his composition “Let The Guitar Play”: The Radio Version, The Soul Radio Version, and The 70's Version. The first two feature Run DMC's Darryl McDaniels, who delivers a poetic rap over an EDM-style drum beat, serving as a dynamic catalyst for Santana to intricately weave his signature guitar magic. This limited edition three song 12” is pressed on tie-dye vinyl.

Native American guitarist Jesse Ed Davis was the “go-to” guy for a remarkable group of musicians. Starting in the mid-‘60s, he toured with Conway Twitty, then became a key part of Taj Mahal’s band, playing on several albums and tours including an appearance in The Rolling Stones Rock and Roll Circus, and, perhaps most famously, accompanied George Harrison during the Concert for Bangladesh, followed by work on various solo albums by John Lennon, Ringo Starr, Gene Clark, Leonard Cohen, and Jackson Browne (that’s Jesse taking the solo on his 1972 breakout hit “Doctor My Eyes”). All this activity caught the eye of ATCO Records, who released his debut LP Jesse Davis in 1971. The album featured Leon Russell, Eric Clapton, Gram Parsons, Merry Clayton, Ben Sidran, John Simon (producer of The Band), Alan White (of Yes), and many others including Delaney Bramlett behind the mixing desk. A year later, Atco released Ululu containing some of the same all-stars, plus Duck Dunn, Jim Keltner, and Dr. John – and a version of George Harrison’s “Sue Me, Sue You Blues” before even George recorded it. Of late, there’s been something of a Jesse Ed Davis revival. Besides Real Gone Records releases, Davis was a major figure in the documentary Rumble: The Indians Who Rocked the World…and now this fall comes a full-fledged biography, Washita Love Child: The Life and Times of Jesse Ed Davis, by Dr. Douglas Miller. To honor the man and the occasion of the book’s release (and to slake guitar-heads the world over thirsting for more tasty Jesse Ed licks), Real Gone Music releases Tomorrow May Not Be Your Day: The Unissued Atco Recordings 1970-1971, a double-LP collection consisting of, as the title says, all unreleased recordings taken from Jesse’s sessions for his two Atco solo records. Along the way you’ll find completely unreleased songs (“Slinky Jam”), unexpected covers of “Ain’t No Beatle,” “Kansas City,” and “Tracks of My Tears,” unissued instrumentals (including a version of Dylan’s “Love Minus Zero/No Limit”), and an entire side featuring alternate versions of Jesse’s masterpiece, “Washita Love Child.” Remastered by Mike Milchner at Sonic Vision, and featuring notes by Dr. Miller festooned by photos contributed by Jesse’s son William “Billy” Noriega, Tomorrow May Not Be Your Day: The Unissued Atco Recordings 1970-1971 represents a major archival find from one of rock’s most intriguing characters, out on Cobalt “Blue Jean” vinyl limited to 1500 copies worldwide.

Had a bad day? Well, news of this 1995 smash album (also known as Daniel Powter) finally receiving a vinyl release should turn it around! Yes, it does indeed include the #1 hit “Bad Day,” which is one of those songs that has so fully infiltrated pop culture that most people don’t even know who the original performer was! But this RSD Black Friday reissue should remind them: it’s a model of finely-crafted adult alternative pop, produced (but not overly polished) by Mitchell Froom. DP went Top Ten not just in the US, but in the UK, Japan…and, of course, was a huge hit in Powter’s native Canada. Includes a color printed inner sleeve…reissued with the full support of the artist himself! Highlighter Yellow Vinyl limited to 1250 copies worldwide!

Joe Henry’s 2009 record “Blood From Stars” sees him exploring the realms of orchestral blues and jazz. Not only is Henry a Grammy Award winning producer, but also a well-respected and prolific artist in his own right. With his evocative lyrics and soulful vocal delivery, Henry crafts a poignant narrative that stands as a testament to his terrific skills as a songwriter and lyricist. Supported by the likes of guitarist Marc Ribot and pianist Patrick Warren, the album leans into the darker and more raw sounds of blues – a departure from the expected Joe Henry sound to create something new but captivating all the same. Now available on 180g black double vinyl for the first time ever, the 2024 reissue includes five special “Live-On-Air” bonus tracks, recorded and broadcast live in Los Angeles on KCRW’s “Morning Becomes Eclectic” hosted by Jason Bentley on Oct 8, 2009. They allow the listener to get even closer to Henry’s powerful words and melodies, making the reissue of “Blood From Stars” a great addition to any Joe Henry fan’s collection.

Magdalena Bay's first EP for Luminelle, 2020's A Little Rhythm and a Wicked Feeling, is full of electro-pop gems from the Los Angeles duo, who released their fantastic debut, Mercurial World in 2021.
Few artists are at once artful and savvy enough to transcend the endless scroll, but over the past 18 months, LA-based indie-pop duo Magdalena Bay have used social platforms to dispatch their music, and what you might call their philosophy, in hypnotic, ephemeral bursts. A long trip through their feeds produces music videos in miniature, irreverent pontifications on the state of the music industry delivered via home video VHS aesthetics, and existential meditations on everything from International Women’s Day to the clone craze of the early aughts to the indefinite lifespan of plants. To Mica Tenenbaum and Matt Lewin, reality can be unmade, manipulated beyond all recognition; their project is as much musical as it is an experiment in pop persona and visual aesthetics. On October 8th, Magdalena Bay will release their debut full-length LP, Mercurial World, via Luminelle. Entirely written, produced, recorded, mixed and mastered by the duo, Mercurial World proposes an abstract theory of time and explores the staggering “what ifs” that make up the human experience. Approaching reality as a construct allows Magdalena Bay to enact their own, one that is committed to nothing but expanding the possible. Even the album’s sequencing hints at the eternal: the first track is titled “The End,” the last is “The Beginning,” forming a perfect loop when you listen to it straight through. “Matt, Matt, wake up!” Tenenbaum whispers on the introductory track. “I was thinking about how there’s no true end to anything/ Everything comes from and goes to the same place: NOWHERE.” “Mercurial World has a lot of outsized themes on it, like destiny, death, and doing the impossible,” Tenenbaum explains. “It’s not exactly a concept album, but we love prog-rock, so we love a concept.” Tenenbaum and Lewin met over a decade ago at an after-school music program in their hometown of Miami, where they bonded over a shared love of Genesis and King Crimson, eventually starting a prog-rock band together that lasted until they moved away to college. The two reconnected after freshman year and decided to continue their teen rock project, this time in a radically new form that would come to be Magdalena Bay. “We started discovering all of this experimental pop music that pushed the boundaries of what ‘pop’ really means,” Lewin says. Bleeding-edge producers like Charli XCX and Grimes were a gateway, and by 2019, Magdalena Bay self-released their debut collection, mini mix vol. 1, followed soon after by a slew of one-off singles, all of which arrived accompanied by tricked-out videos. “Those early references have gotten more and more dissolved as we’ve come into our own sound,” Tenenbaum says. “Our philosophy was just to throw things at the wall. I like to think that our music lives between genres.” In 2020, Magdalena Bay debuted A Little Rhythm and a Wicked Feeling, an EP that included the song “Killshot,” which went viral when anime communities on YouTube and TikTok created fancams and choreographed dances to it. When the band’s growing fanbase demanded a slowed down version of the track, the duo obliged. The EP landed them opening slots on sold-out tours with Kero Kero Bonito and Yumi Zouma, but when the COVID-19 pandemic arrived stateside, they were forced back into isolation, a state they fortunately thrive in. The pair met the moment; they upped their online presence and began streaming sets on Twitch, organically building a following while much of the world was stuck inside. “We spend all of our time together, and in some ways Mercurial World is about that particular sense of madness in containment,” Lewin says. “We live together and make art together; this immerses you in our creative, insular universe.” On the title track, Tenenbaum sings directly to her bandmate against a glitzy backdrop punctuated by chiptunish blips: “You’ll be around always/ Holding me down/ Living in a mercurial world.” The Madonna interpolation contributes to the sense that Magdalena Bay operate on a space-time continuum that is uncanny, at once familiar and not. “Many of the lyrics express anxiety about losing time,” Tenenbaum says. The high dramatics of “You Lose!” align with the penultimate, throbbing club track “Dreamcatching” as both reflect on the terrorizing realization that everyone eventually runs out of it. More specifically: “‘You Lose!’ is about the industry, and the anxiety that comes with trying to be a musician and maybe not quite making it,” Lewin says. Words like “anxiety” and “paranoia” come up regularly when Magdalena Bay describe their debut, but the production is beyond confident. Tracks flit between genre trappings with the ease of a band who reject the need to present any one way. “Hysterical Us” is propelled by sweeping instrumental flourishes that recall the blown-out aesthetics of a closing number in a way over-budget stadium set, while a snare snaps like a funkified house song on the bass-heavy “Secrets (Your Fire).” Their confidence overwhelms midway through “Chaeri,” when Tenenbaum pleads for forgiveness while a soundscape so vast and thunderous threatens to consume her. But even as they dabble in darkness, Magdalena Bay do so without ever dragging you down into it. You can hear the band’s reverence for Electric Light Orchestra in it, who they describe as “grandiose, but still cheeky.” The same descriptor can be applied to Mercurial World. On this album, Magdalena Bay offer the listener a prismatic experience, one that is built on a desire to simply believe in something beyond the finitude of our lives. It’s not religion, it’s not spirituality; it’s this music, this moment. The album closes with “The Beginning,” a discotheque ready call-back to “The End” that momentarily resolves all of Magdalena Bay’s late-night philosophical questions. “Matt, go back to sleep. I think I’ve finally got it all figured out,” Tenenbaum whispers. “Like a butterfly floating in amber, we've made this moment eternal.”
For years, Childish Gambino's Atavista hid in plain sight. When he released an unfinished version of the record on March 15, 2020, it spent just 12 hours on his website before he pulled it down. Reappearing on streaming a week later as 3.15.20, the project brought up almost as many questions as sparkling neo-soul anthems, which still sounded slicker than the average as raw cuts titled after timestamps.
Atavista is an ode to impermanence, never more directly than over the glimmering guitar of "Time" with Grande. ("One thing's for certain, baby/We're running out of time," they harmonize on the chorus.) But in Gambino's capable hands, Atavista also slows down to enjoy the view, the sonic equivalent of a luxe leather-interior BMW cruising an open California highway. "I did what I wanted to," he revels on closing track "Final Church." Atavista took many shapes over the years to reach a final form. In each warm refrain, tight sequence, and carefully chosen collaborator, Gambino demonstrates why some things are worth waiting for.

“You have to see them in concert,” is what fans of The National have been preaching for years. “The songs transform. It’s a whole other level.” Recorded live (without overdubs) in June 2024 at an architecturally stunning venue named for famed Italian film composer Ennio Morricone, Rome is the definitive live document of The National. The 21-track double album is truly career spanning, and showcases scintillating versions of beloved songs like “Bloodbuzz Ohio,” “Don’t Swallow the Cap,” “I Need My Girl,” “The System Only Dreams in Total Darkness,” “England” and “Fake Empire”; plus sharpened readings of recent tracks “Eucalyptus,” “New Order T-Shirt,” “Tropic Morning News” and the boundary-pushing “Smoke Detector.” The National’s setlist changes significantly show to show, revisiting their 25-year catalog to cast fresh light on hidden gems. For Rome that includes the show opener “Runaway,” “Lemonworld,” “The Geese of Beverly Road,” “Lit Up” and a tour de force pairing of “Humiliation” from their critically acclaimed album Trouble Will Find Me into Sad Songs For Dirty Lovers’ “Murder Me Rachael.” The Rome encore features the election anthem “Mr. November,” and, from High Violet, “Terrible Love” and the show-closing fan singalong, “Vanderlyle Crybaby Geeks.” The live album was mixed by the band’s longtime collaborator Peter Katis. Reviewing a National performance this summer, NME wrote that “every song is played like it could be the last.” Rome captures that playing-for-keeps urgency on record and serves not merely as a concert souvenir but the latest vital addition to the band’s peerless catalog.

DMX made his legendary introduction to the world in 1998 with his multi-platinum-selling debut album It’s Dark and Hell Is Hot, which captured his gift for blending light and heavy concepts behind an intense, menacing presence at the microphone. Before the end of that year DMX had released his second hit, Flesh of My Flesh, Blood of My Blood, which also reached #1. DMX’s next three albums also went on to secure the top spot, making him the first rapper to have their first five albums go straight to the top of the US chart.
Yet, one thing remained as a consistent theme across DMX’s releases — his profound prayers. Found on each of his first six studio albums, these prayers (which do not contain beats) blend supplications, thanksgivings, confessions, and meditations on life, death, and the beyond.
In celebration of DMX’s legacy and ahead of his 54th birthday, UMe will be releasing Let Us Pray: Partnering with GRAMMY award-winning songwriter and producer Warryn Campbell, we set DMX’s prayers to music for the first time on this groundbreaking project that marries hip-hop and gospel with features from Killer Mike, Snoop Dogg, LeCrae, MC Lyte and more.

Creating a balance between the strength of bravado and the vulnerability of being intimate. A new journey awaits in "BRAVADO+INTiMO" or (B.i.) by .idk. (Ignorantly Delivering Knowledge). The name itself mirrors the enigmatic creator's duality. This musical journey is less of a narrative in words and more of an exploration of essence and melodic resonance. Through a fusion of soul, jazz, and hip hop, with a futuristic touch courtesy of the electronic leaning sequencer, .idk. crafts a sonic landscape that defies convention. “My goal with this album was to simplify everything.” With a concise 32-minute runtime and a focus on conceptual clarity, "BRAVADO+INTiMO" emerges as one of .idk.’s most accessible and cohesive projects to date. “With B.i., I just wanted to sing over beats that artists like MF DOOM would normally rap over and only rap when it felt the most natural” Drawing inspiration from his collaborations with MF DOOM, .idk. effortlessly transitions between singing and rapping, creating a seamless experience that captivates from start to finish. .idk.’s efforts provide rapping, singing, production, and even creative direction for a very specific language in a world that he governs quite well. BRAVADO+INTiMO (B.i.) provides a new palette for the future of melodic rap while capturing the essence of hip hop’s foundation.
