Alan Sparhawk has always been a prolific, protean musician. A restless soul eager to explore unfamiliar sonic and psychic terrain. Though he's obviously (and justifiably) best-known for his thirty years as frontman of the legendary band Low, a look at Sparhawk's many side projects across that same span of time shows him experimenting with everything from punk and funk to production work and improvisation. Low itself never settled for a set sound or approach. The band was always a collaboration-a conversation, a romance-between Sparhawk and his wife, Mimi Parker, who was the band's co-founder, drummer, co-lead vocalist, and it's blazing irreplaceable heart. To take the journey from Low's hushed early work, through the tremendous melodies of their middle period, all the way to the late lush chaos of their final albums, is to witness heads, hearts, and spirits in an act of perpetual becoming.Parker passed away in 2022 after a long battle with cancer, and there is no question that WHITE ROSES, MY GOD is a record borne of grief. You can hear it in the title, as well as tracks such as "Heaven", in which Sparhawk describes the afterlife, wrenchingly, as "a lonely place if you're alone." You can sense it too in Sparhawk's decision to create this thing entirely on his own: every note, every lyric, every programmed beat. It would be reductive, even foolish, to see grief as the sole source or the final limit of this taut, brilliant, provocative, thrilling album, whose bold experimentation is powered by profound lyrics and propulsive beats. "Can you feel something here?" Sparhawk asks on "Feel Something." The line repeats over and over, evolving first into "I want to feel something here" and then "Can you help me feel something here?" Meanwhile the musical means he's chosen to convey this message-especially the pitch-shifter-might seem at first like they're making it harder to access that very something he wants us (and himself) to feel. Isn't the vocoder a barrier between us and the deep emotionality we've long associated with an Alan Sparhawk vocal? Maybe, maybe not. Probably not. But even if it is, then it's a barrier worth breaking and the music itself is the hammer. Sparhawk conjures forth the ghosts trapped inside these machines. WHITE ROSES, MY GOD is an exorcism whose purpose is not to banish the spirit but to set it free. In many ways WHITE ROSES, MY GOD feels like a hard break with the past, almost a debut. And yet there's incredible continuity with Sparhawk's past work and his traditional ways of working. He's pathbreaking, yet again, invested as ever in the endless process of becoming himself. As he puts it on "Station": "I can please myself with the things I seek out." Us, too. We are lucky to be here to hear it as it happens.

This year, Richard's musician father experienced mini strokes while being diagnosed with cancer; last year, her cousin Cisco was fatally shot seven times in New Orleans. The album was a critical hit, hailed as Best New Music by Pitchfork and receiving praise from Stereogum as Album of the Week, NPR Music, Bandcamp Daily, The Fader, Bitter Southerner, and Edition, among many other publications.The making of it's follow-up, Quiet in a World Full of Noise, began in 2023 in upstate New York. Fresh from a break-up, Zahn sat at his piano and poured himself into writing and recording instrumental compositions. "I wrote all these stream-of-consciousness pieces on piano, and they were eerie, spacious piano tracks," he says. He used a piano that had been unconventionally tuned to the room rather than to standard pitch. These oddly tuned, eerie instrumental recordings were never intended to be an album. Six months later, he listened to the recordings again and sent them to Richard who immediately recognized their potential and said, "Oh, this is the next album."Richard went into the studio the next day and wrote and recorded melodies and lyrics to Zahn's piano recordings. Zahn brought in gifted musicians like Bryan Senti on strings (violin, viola, and violoncello da spalla) and CJ Camerieri on brass (French horn, flugelhorn, and trumpet). In some cases, like on the track "Life in Numbers," Zahn used only the original first-take piano recording and scratch vocal, resulting in an intimate close-up of both Richard and Zahn.With Quiet, Zahn and Richard have made an album that serves as a blueprint for stillness, simplicity, and the art of working across differences in the midst of a polarizing cultural climate. Richard describes Quiet in a World Full of Noise as grounding: "Right now, everyone's a little bit overwhelmed. In February 2024, just shy of the tenth anniversary of Alvvays' self-titled debut, it's second song and single, "Archie, Marry Me," reached a rarified threshold for our streaming age-one-hundred million listens through a single platform. For the world's biggest pop stars that's an average achievement, but for an upstart indie rock band then writing in a backroad farmhouse on a Canadian island, it represented a staggering proof of connection and widespread resonance. Makes sense, after all: "Archie, Marry Me" is a softly stinging, pointedly funny portrait of a common end-of-youth predicament-to wed or not to wed, to involve the state and the possibility of financial ruin when you're already saddled with student loans and just trying to survive. Instantly relatable, it is an anthem about prescribed social expectations and delighting, however noncommittally, in outcast status. Now remastered and reissued with deep cut "Underneath Us" to mark a glorious decade of deadpan jangle, Alvvays feels that way from end to end-literally, from the opening stalking-you-with-love anthem "Adult Diversion" to the ennui escapism of sci-fi closer "Red Planet." In a little more than 30 minutes, Alvvays give us a song about loving someone to actual death ("Next of Kin"), how keeping secrets will destroy what you think you want ("The Agency Group"), and another incisive song about the societal demands of love and marriage ("Atop a Cake"). When Molly Rankin, Alec O'Hanley, Kerri MacLellan, and Brian Murphy cut these songs with Chad VanGaalen in 2013, long before they had a record deal, they were, in fact, young adults trying to figure out these encroaching exigencies for themselves. Again, these problems don't age; some of us just happen to be lucky enough to age out of them.Little of this would matter if the songs themselves didn't stick, if the melodies weren't as timeless as the topics. But the tension between Alvvays' shimmer and snap and Rankin's knowingly droll delivery connects these numbers to a brilliant and deep rock continuum, from the glories of C86 and the triumphs of Athens in the '80s to Celtic folk's own magnetic candour. Each of these songs lands several hooks apiece: the sparkling drum-machine drift of "Dives," the noise-caked sway of "The Agency Group," and, of course, the half-diffident and half-confident matrimonial plea of "Archie, Marry Me" and that pearly guitar lick. Ten years ago or ten years from now, here are ten songs to slip in your pocket and pull out when the decisions of the world seem to swirl like the very guitars that shape them.
