One of the top emerging artists across all genres of music, Billy Strings has made his most ambitious album to date with Renewal, a 16-song collection that effortlessly positions him as a singular talent—one who reveres the history of the acoustic music that inspired him, while pushing it forward into new spaces and audiences through his incredible live shows.

Serving as a reflection of Strings’ diverse musical influences, Renewal reaches well beyond bluegrass with elements of heavy metal, jam bands, psychedelic music and classic rock—even though it’s still primarily an acoustic record. The album follows his Grammy Award-winning project, Home, as well as industry recognition ranging from Pollstar’s Breakthrough Artist of the Pandemic to the International Bluegrass Music Association’s Guitar Player of the Year and New Artist of the Year.

“I’ve learned, you’ve just got to let the song do its thing,” shares Strings. “So that’s what I try to do—write songs and let them come out however they do.”

Friends! I am so pleased to announce A Night At The Little Los Angeles - the 4-track version of Sundowner. Recorded at home and in my back shed - aka The Little Los Angeles - in suburban Kansas during the summer and winter seasons of 2017 and 2018. This is quite simply the sound of me alone in a room with a four-track to catch my songs as they fell out of my mouth. When I later went into a proper studio to make Sundowner my goal was to capture the essence of these initial recordings, and here you will now have access to the very essence I was chasing. In many ways, this feels like a proper album to me, as it's my initial attempt to capture the Kansas sunset and put it into sound, where as Sundower was an attempt of an attempt. I love and am proud of them both, of course, but am happy to - for the first time - share this vulnerable side of my songwriting process with the public. Many of my favorite recordings have been made inside of an artist's home without regard of the outside world, but instead deep in their own world that they're creating in real time. And with that - I'd like to invite you into my own little world here and now and ask you to please... step inside of... and spend A Night At The Little Los Angeles!

Liam Kazar

Due North

Vinyl: $20.98 Buy

Liam Kazar makes joyful rock songs so irresistible they feel timeless. Just ask Jeff Tweedy. "I love everything about Liam. His voice, his songs, the way he plays instruments, his smile, his cooking... Everything," says Tweedy. "Whenever I hear one of his songs for the first time I almost immediately start thinking to myself, 'oh yeah! This song! I love this song.' It's a magic trick very few people can pull off: making something brand new sound like a cherished memory." But on Kazar's debut album Due North, out via Woodist and Mare Records, the album's ten tracks are full of so much charm, wit, and heart it can't be a sleight of hand. The Kansas City-based, Chicago-raised musician and acclaimed chef / founder of the Armenian pop-up restaurant Isfahan, describes the making of Due North as a personal revelation, where the more he wrote the more his songs showed what kind of artist he's always wanted to be. While he's consistently been a dream bandmate over the past several years, performing with artists like Tweedy, Steve Gunn, Daniel Johnston, and more, making his own songs presented a chance to finally find his own voice. But figuring out how to step out was a rewarding challenge. "This record kind of all stemmed from a conversation I had with Jeff," says Kazar. "I showed him some of my earliest songs I was working on and he told me, 'It sounds like you're writing for the people in your bands, you're not writing for yourself.' He was completely right. I was not writing songs for myself." With that needed insight, Kazar decided to start from scratch and write songs that felt like himself. "These songs totally blew me away the first time I heard them: they sound like David Bowie meets the Band," says Mare Records co-founder Kevin Morby. Due North was mixed by Sam Evian at his Flying Cloud Recordings Studio in upstate New York. Along with drummer Spencer Tweedy and bassist Lane Beckstrom, Kazar enlists keyboardist Dave Curtin (Woongi), co-producer James Elkington on pedal steel, as well as Ohmme and Andrew Sa on backing vocals.

What Do You Think About the Car? is the debut studio album by English singer-songwriter and musician Declan McKenna. It was released worldwide on July 21, 2017 through Columbia Records. This is the first time it is being issued on vinyl in the U.S.

In 2015, at age 15, McKenna won the Glastonbury Festival's Emerging Talent Competition, and started writing songs for the album soon after, while still in school. He composed most of the album in his bedroom, "Brazil" was written when he was 15. McKenna says, "The album is about me being playful and positive about not necessarily happy topics ... That's what I'm like as a character. I try not to be too distant from serious topics as well. The two go together. "Paracetamol" was written after learning about the suicide of transgender teen Leelah Alcorn and the media's representation of LGBT communities in general.

Atmosphere

WORD? [LP]

Vinyl: $27.98 UNAVAILABLE

Following their last release, The Day Before Halloween - an imaginative, distorted-synth-driven concept album - Atmosphere returns with a refreshing new project, simply titled WORD? Steering back toward their signature sound, the album further highlights producer Ant's undeniable talents as the project leans into the classic boom-bap aesthetic, bringing a unique energy out of Slug's wisdom, wit and delivery. From onset, WORD? proves to be every bit an exercise in refining and advancing their craft as it is a harkening to earlier work. That is, while their releases have grown more broodingly cinematic, and increasingly concerned with the human condition and mortality, WORD? manages to reintroduce moments of levity and lightheartedness throughout, an approach seldom heard on their albums of late.

Iridescent Mother of Pearl w/ Blue Undertones (Colored). For two decades, Mono have defined and refined a kind of orchestral rock that is as emotional as it is experimental. Their 10 studio albums over those 20 years have established Mono as what Pitchfork described as "one of the most distinctive bands of the 21st Century." Meanwhile, their live concerts are typically more subdued in instrumentation - and more supercharged in volume and voltage. Rarely is there the opportunity to combine those two experiences. In their 20-year history as a band, Mono have presented no more than a half-dozen live concerts featuring the support of an orchestra. Such events are not only unusual - they are also unforgettable.Beyond the Past - Live in London with the Platinum Anniversary Orchestra documents Mono's extraordinary performance from the Beyond the Past event that celebrated the band's 20th anniversary, which took place at the historic Barbican Centre in London, England on December 14, 2019. For that once-in-a-lifetime event, Mono selected a memorable lineup of old and new friends, including fellow Japanese underground icons, Boris and Envy, as well as French post-metal legends, Alcest, and UK collaborators A.A. Williams and Jo Quail. The event culminated with Mono performing with a full orchestra to a rapt, sold-out audience of 2, 000.Playing through a two-hour set that touches on the band's entire history, the sheer euphoria and dynamic resonance that engulfed the massive crowd was captured in brilliant detail by Mono's live sound engineer, Matt Cook. Meticulously mastered by Bob Weston and presented here in it's entire two-hour glory, Beyond the Past is one of the most essential Mono recordings. Packaged in a triple gatefold with accompanying 40-page photo book, this is the rare document of an event that is an event in and of itself.

Musician and filmmaker Domingæ is probably best known as the founder of experimental psych band Föllakzoid. Written whilst stranded in Mexico and Tokyo on her way to a world tour with Föllakzoid, her new debut solo album Æ has taken the decompositional system she devised for the band and added the depth of inner exploration and a symbiotic relationship with musical craft. The resulting sound is as groovy and hypnotic as the best Föllakzoid tracks but with a seductive and darkening electronic texture. She has become a channel in which the shadows inhabit. Domingæ's sounds and formats are articulated via depuration, expanding in time and space via the subtraction of shifting elements. The process of unlearning and uninstalling previously established creative softwares in order to achieve dissolution has always been a central focus in her creative pursuit. Æ is a result of said experimentation, the dissolution of preconceived notions to create a minimal sound yet rich in textures. On limited White vinyl.

Slothrust

Everyone Else [LP]

Vinyl: $22.98 Buy

MP3 Album: $9.99 Download

Slothrust is Leah Wellbaum (guitar, vocals), Kyle Bann (bass), and Will Gorin (drums). Above all the overriding ethos of Everyone Else is its sense of inclusiveness: all people, every feeling, quiet, loud, any time signature. The band’s 2012 debut Feels Your Pain, and its successor 2014’s Of Course You Do, established the band as a breed apart, serving up deceptively clever epics that veer satisfyingly between incandescent riffing and pop hooks, winsome anxiety and powerful heft. With their long-awaited third album, Slothrust deliver ten new songs that reward repeated listens with complex arrangements and lyrical depth. From the slow burn of the centerpiece track “Horseshoe Crab” to the bizzarro world lullaby “Like a Child Hiding Behind Your Tombstone” and the ripping, hyper-adrenalized “Rotten Pumpkin,” the midpoint between grunge and art rock is the aesthetic that Slothrust elevates. Sharp-eyed individualism, serious musicianship, humble intelligence, controlled abandon. "Slothrust have released some their best songs yet on their recent album 'Everyone Else'.

Goat

Headsoup [Limited Edition Cyan LP]

Vinyl: $40.98 UNAVAILABLE
Limited cyan colored vinyl LP pressing includes bonus 7" vinyl. When a mysterious masked collective called Goat first emerged in 2012, armed with an incendiary debut single 'Goatman' and a backstory for the ages - the band's anonymous members claimed to hail from the remote and cursed village of Korpilombo in northern Sweden, where inhabitants had for centuries been devoted to a form of voodoo introduced by a travelling witch doctor - there was no one else on earth quite like them. Their mythology enticing, their music full of sinuous grooves and manic explosions of fuzz, Goat were outliers from the very beginning. Their debut album, 2012's 'World Music', received an avalanche of acclaim, critics and psych heads left enraptured by it's thunderous intensity, conjured from a singular mix of sounds from across the earth.

Sarala

Released in 1995, Sarala marked it's time by generating a genuine enthusiasm for Mandingo music, encouraging many Western musicians to go to Mali and explore this music at it's very source. Fruit of the reunion of Hank Jones (an African-American musician and one of the most gifted pianists of his generation) and Cheick-Tidiane Seck (a reputed arranger, band-leader, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist from Mali) the album is a symbiosis - one of the spirit and the heart - of two genres.

She asked for Stan Getz, Allard produced him, and the result is some of Getz's most deeply and gently attentive playing on record.

Music exists in movement and change, but before any part of it can be pinned down for analysis, it's often moved and taken on a new face. The transformation is often driven by culture as forward-thinking people avoid the proverbial paths in search of revolution. Even though our pioneers prophesied that the revolution would not be televised, the message has permeated. It's spreading like wildfire and leaders are defined by those that speak first: Jazz Is Dead.   Music is the universal language and we are the interpreter of sound, a message that has been lost in transcription. Under Jazz Is Dead, younger artists are elaborating upon conversations started decades ago; jazz icons are utilizing vintage equipment to create new masters with Adrian Younge and Ali Shaheed Muhammad; the same equipment that recorded their coveted catalogs. The vitality embedded in the new masters epitomizes our quest for new life in music: Jazz Is Dead.   This compilation features legendary artists Roy Ayers, Gary Bartz, Marcos Valle, Azymuth, Doug Carn, Joao Donato, & Brian Jackson, who will each have their own individual release, working alongside Adrian Younge and Ali Shaheed Muhammad.

In February 2018, Roy Ayers performed four sold out shows in Los Angeles as part of the Jazz Is Dead Black History Month series.  It wasn't until 2020 that fans of Ayers discovered that in addition to those shows, the legendary vibraphone player had also recorded an entire album of new material with Adrian Younge and Ali Shaheed Muhammad.    Over the course of it's eight original compositions, written collaboratively by Younge, Shaheed Muhammad & Ayers and recorded at Younge's Linear Labs in Los Angeles, the resulting album sounds both like an unearthed an unreleased album from Ayers' classic period in the 1970s (which produced the oft-sampled "Red, Black & Green," "We Live In Brooklyn, Baby," "Everybody Loves The Sunshine," and "Running Away), as well as something startling, new and unexpected.    Joining Ayers, Younge & Shaheed Muhammad on this musical journey are drummer Greg Paul, vocalists Loren Oden, Joy Gilliam, Saudia Yasmein, Elgin Clark & Anitra Castleberry, as well as Phil Ranelin & Wendell Harrison of the legendary Spiritual Jazz label Tribe Records.  The 8 tracks on this album testify to the love not only of a legendary musician's legacy, but to the vitality & necessity of this music and these sounds in the present era, a thread that will likely run throughout all of the upcoming releases from Jazz Is Dead Records.

Los Angeles independent label Minky Records is issuing two crucial, hitherto unheard slices of music recorded in the '80s by the late L.A. punk rock legend Jeffrey Lee Pierce and his band The Gun Club. On June 12, the company will release an exclusive single version of the Pierce original "Bad Indian" and a cover of Jody Reynolds' "Fire of Love." This Minky 45 will be accompanied by an even more impressive vault discovery: Soulsuckers On Parade, a full-length 1984 Pierce solo recording drawn from an abortive session for the cowpunk compilation album Don't Shoot, first released by Zippo Records in the U.K. The vocalist is supported by an all-star unit comprising guitarist Dave Alvin, drummer Bill Bateman, and the late pianist Gene Taylor, then of the hot L.A. roots combo The Blasters, and bassist Jack Waterson of Green On Red; Chris D. (Chris Desjardins, who also produced the date) and The Gun Club's Kid Congo Powers guest on background vocals.Featuring covers of songs originated by Willie Nelson, Big Joe Turner, and Creedence Clearwater Revival, a wacky, profane blues Pierce improvisation called "New Way of Walkin', and a rampaging, demented seventeen-minute original, "Walkin' Down the Street (Doin' My Thing)", the album will be issued as a limited edition Kelly-green vinyl LP on Record Store Day (June 12), and an unlimited expanded CD package (with studio chatter and improvised vocals and jams) on the same day.

F.S.Blumm and Nils Frahm have confirmed details of their fourth collaborative album, 2X1=4, which will be released on September 3, 2021, by LEITER, the new label formed by Frahm and his manager, Felix Grimm. The seven-track album finds the duo unexpectedly exploring a dub-influenced universe, though in truth it’s one already familiar to both. F.S.Blumm, for instance, is co-founder of Quasi Dub Development, whose 2014 album, Little-Twister vs Stiff-Neck, featured Lady Ann and Lee Scratch Perry, while Frahm’s music – not least 2018’s All Melody – has occasionally betrayed a fondness for the form’s associated studio techniques, though he concedes wryly that his approach has always been “a little bit more German” than his influences.

"These songs were recorded a few months after the Los Angeles punk scene began. These five statements of intent transcend Punk and project forward into the future: to the analog synth wave of the late '70s and beyond, to the present day, four decades later, when they finally receive an official release. Sourced from the original reel-to-reels, they are a revelation compared to the countless copies that have been circulating by multiple generations of tape-traders. Here, for the first time, is the Screamers' initial and legendary manifesto."The Screamers concept was simple, yet audacious: take the spirit and the look of Punk-the pseudo-psychotic aggression, the spiky hair, vacant stares and barely concealed sadomasochism-and match it to a different configuration than the typical '60s rock template. As launched, the Screamers featured two keyboard players (Tommy Gear and David Brown), a drummer (KK Barrett) and an intensely charismatic singer (Tomata du Plenty). The idea was to be confrontational-to evoke (as Tomata described in an early interview) a state of anxiety."Forty years later, this release builds on the groundswell of interest in the Screamers that has been occurring in the early 21st century. There are web sites with detailed histories of the group and several bootlegs of demos and live material from 1977-79. The video of '122 Hours of Fear'-perhaps their peak moment, recorded at Target Video in August 1978-has now passed over 650,000 views online. This is the Screamers' time, and the time is now." -Jon Savage (excerpt from the liner notes)

Renowned songwriter, Grammy Award winner and three-time Guitar World “Guitarist of the Year”/recent “Guitarist of the Decade” title recipient Mark Tremonti is no stranger to storytelling. Throughout his time with massive bands like Alter Bridge and Creed – and most-recently his solo band, TREMONTI – he has never strayed from his love of writing memorable songs with strong inspiration at their core. With their upcoming fifth album, Marching In Time, the band looks to build upon this trend while exploring their love for searing heavy music, drawing from current events throughout the last year to form the basis of each colossal track. While TREMONTI’s previous album – the critically acclaimed, worldwide-charting A Dying Machine (2018) – was an overall concept album with darker sentiments and story, Marching In Time carries a different vibe altogether. Featuring his signature execution of blistering, laser-precision guitar work and a reverberating, rhythmic metallic attack, the album emerges as an upbeat offering inviting the listener on 12 individual journeys. From the driving drum beat of opener “A World Away”to the epic closer “Marching In Time,” the new album is a reflective look at the world around us today. The band’s unmatched musicianship permeates through the album – showcased on tracks like “Thrown Further,” “In One Piece”and the thought-provoking “Would You Kill” – while the band displays their softer side on the pensive tracks “The Last One Of Us” and “Not Afraid to Lose.” The title track, “Marching In Time,” hits a personal note, telling the story of a father having a child during a global pandemic and how he prepares for life during that time – something Mark Tremonti recently experienced in his own life. Standout debut single, “If Not For You,” displays the evolution of the TREMONTI sound in 2021 and is guaranteed to become a favorite. Marching In Time is the record that will solidify TREMONTI’s place in the hearts of longtime fans as well as add masses to the band’s legion of followers. The album is an exceptional auditory journey of memorable riffs, intriguing lyrics and the unmistakable sound that continues to earn the band prominent global acclaim. Marching In Time by TREMONTI was produced longtime friend and collaborator Michael “Elvis” Baskette, the producer Mark has worked with exclusively since 2007.

While spending time trying to conquer the audio of live-stream athome performances, I got better acquainted with my friend Adam McDaniel, an engineer and producer in Asheville, NC. Adam and I had known each other for years. When the band was a bit smaller I'd often rent his studio, Drop of Sun, for pre-recording / pre tour rehearsals. Summer 2020 was tough for many reasons. But Adam and his wife Emily opened their home to me and made it a safe space to create and let go. I had an idea to record some covers and bring some of the band into the mix, or add other players. I wanted to record 80's songs that I'd overheard walking the aisles at the grocery store, and I needed to laugh and have fun and be a little less serious about the recording process in general. I thought about completely changing some of the songs and turning them inside out. I'd heard "Gloria" by Laura Branigan for the first time at a family Christmas gathering and I was amazed at all the aunts who got up to dance. I imagined them all dancing and laughing in slow motion, and that's when I got the idea to slow the entire song down and try it out in this way. I felt that "Safety Dance" by Men Without Hats could be reinterpreted to be about this time of quarantine and the fear of being around anyone or having too much fun. It made me wonder, is it safe to laugh or dance or be free of it all for just a moment? I know it's not really in my history to do something unintentional or just for the hell of it but my connection to these songs is pretty straightforward, I just wanted to have a little fun and be a little more spontaneous, and I think I needed to remember that I could!

LIMITED RELEASE OF 1000 TRANSLUCENT GREEN VINYL / NEW COVER ARTORIGINALLY RELEASED IN 1982 / REMASTERED BY JOHN GOLDEN MASTERING IN 2010Back in 1981, Negative Approach (along with The Meatmen and the Necros) were one of the dominant forces in the Detroit underground. The ravages of the Motor City made it a perfect breeding ground for this cacophony, later termed "hardcore." Hordes of punks packed the legendary Freezer Theatre to hear John Brannon's jagged, gruff vocals, the McCulloch brothers' (Rob and Graham) guitar/bass gnash, and OP Moore's pounding fury. The band's minimalist (read: 30 second songs) and aggressive brand of punk has inspired countless hardcore bands around the globe.
