Record Store Day Compilation
Record Store Day is just days away. This year is the tenth anniversary of the event, and both Record Store Day and Mills Record Company are doing it up. The former releasing some of the most bombastic exclusives in a minute; the latter augmented that new vinyl smell with freshly arrived wax, refreshments, live music, and more. But you knew all that, right? One of the things Record Store Day always does a great job of is their compilations. Perfect for acolytes and hardcore fans, there are more than a few great mixes on the list. I want to talk about my three most anticipated.
First is Colemine Records 45 compilation, Soul Slabs Volume 1. The 22 track compilation features all the singles the best contemporary soul funk label has put out in the last few years. From The Gripsweats to Gene Washington and The Ironsides, from Orgone to Ikebe Shakedown, Soul Slabs Volume 1 is the compilation that will tear up any dance floor. Hot at points and smooth at others, Soul Slabs Volume 1 offers a peek into one of my favorite labels. This compilation will have you asking not which track is my favorite but which track is not absolute fire. And you’ll be hard pressed to find an answer.
Moving in a different vein, Sire’s Just Say 50: Sire Records 50th Anniversary Box Set is the perfect record for any music fan. Featuring the wide breadth of Sire Record’s artist catalogue (from k.d. lang to Seal, from Madonna to Ice T), the four LP compilation represents some of the best pop music to come from the label. Perfect for putting on at a party, Just Say 50: Sire Records 50th Anniversary Box Set is the ultimate compilation for Record Store Day. It is full of the artists we love, the ones we’ve forgotten, and the ones who will join our pantheons of favorites.
The last compilation that has me jazzed is Giant Single: Profile Records Rap Anthology Volume 1. The double LP captures the sound of hip hop’s dawning. Featuring Run DMC, Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde, K-Rob, and more, the rap compilation is full of songs you know and songs you don’t. Giant Single: Profile Records Rap Anthology Volume 1 has the heat for casual and hardcore fan alike. And with so many tracks that are hard to find on vinyl, the compilation is sent straight from the Rap Gods.
Record Store Day will be a party from 7am to 10pm on April 22nd, so mark your calendars and get to Mills Record Company this weekend. Whether you need to grab these compilations, some other exclusive release, or want to dig through the slick ton of fresh used records, Record Store Day at Mills Record Company will be the place to be.
